Women's Basketball Drops One To Duquesne

Jaclyn Konieczka

NIAGARA UNIV., NY. - Sarah Wilson (St.Catherines, Ont.) led all Purple Eagle cagers with 15 points, but the Niagara women’s basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Duquesne via a 67-48 margin. The loss places Niagara at 3-10 overall.

Things started well for the Purple Eagles, but then momentum turned against them.

"We shot well in the first half," stated head coach Kendra Faustin. "While we did have some positives, turnovers hurt us tonight as the little things mounted up."

The Dukes bolted out to a four point lead, which swelled to 12 with seven minutes left in the half. Spurred by an Erika Harris (Gahanna, Ohio) jumper, the Purple Eagles went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 27-21. The rest of the first half went back and forth, until the first half ended with Duquesne up 36-28.

Duquesne came strong out of the gates again in the second half, as they grew their lead to 21 points only eight minutes into the final frame. Niagara continued to play strong, chipping at the lead, but just couldn’t get the strong run that they needed. Harris added 11 points and Jaclyn Konieczka (Parma, Ohio) had five rebounds in seven minutes of action. Jade Singleton scored 20 and Kristi Little netted 10 for the Dukes.

The Purple Eagles travel to take on Saint Peter’s on Sunday in a MAAC game. Tip-off for the game is slated for 2 p.m.
