NIAGARA UN., N.Y. – The volleyball team (1-4) suffered a loss on the second day of the WNY Classic, dropping a straight-set match to South Florida (1-1), Saturday, 30-19, 30-23, 30-16.
Junior Nicole Piette (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) had a team-high .357 attack percentage with six kills, while seniors Raelean Rush (Amherst, N.Y.) and Maurin Lawrence (Corfu, N.Y.) led the way with eight kills each.
"We definitely fought hard tonight," NU head coach Susan Clements said, "but wee need to cut out the unforced errors in our game. I think that we will definitely compete in our conference if we continue to compete like we did tonight."
Senior Mallory Boron (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) had a team-best 24 assists and tied for the team lead with two blocks. Senior Sara Mancini (Lancaster, N.Y.) recorded eight digs, with Rush chipping in with seven.
The Bulls outhit Niagara .304 to .042 as the Purple Eagles committed 24 hitting errors to USF’s 12. Marcela Gurgel had a match-high 16 kills while teammate Nakia Williams had eight kills with one error and an attack percentage of .500.
Both teams take on Fordham in the final day of the WNY Classic on Sunday, with Niagara facing the Rams at 4:30 p.m.
