Purple Eagles Fall to Kansas

CHICAGO – Two of the nation’s longest win streaks met Friday night in the NCAA Tournament’s first-round action in the West Regional at the United Center.

 

The Niagara University men’s basketball team entered the contest with a 12-game win streak while Kansas University had won 11-straight games. When Friday’s game ended, Kansas’s win streak was that one that was alive as the Jayhawks improved to 31-4 with a 107-67 win over the Purple Eagles (23-12).

 

The Purple Eagles were led by junior forward Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) as he scored 17 points, all in the second half. Fisher's 17 points now give 999 career points at Niagara.

 

Senior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) finished his career with 13 points while freshman Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) had 12 points and four steals. Senior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) recorded 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Lewis was named Niagara’s Chevrolet Scholarship Player of the Game, earning Niagara’s general scholarship fund $1,000 in his name.

 

Kansas, making its 18th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, was led by Mario Chalmers’ 19 points. Russell Robinson had 16 points and eight assists. Julian Wright recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds while Sherron Collins scored 15 points. Darrell Arthur netted 12 points.

 

Brown hit two three-point field goals and Lewis converted two offensive rebounds into baskets to tie the game 14-14 with 12:37 left in the half. Kansas then went on an 18-5 run for a 32-19 lead when Collins sank one of two foul shots with 6:39 left in the half. Miles hit back-to-back shots to bring the Purple Eagles within nine, 32-23, at 5:52.

 

The Jayhawks then used a 20-4 run, including the half’s last 12 points, to take a 52-27 lead. Collins, who had two three-pointers during that run, and Robinson each had 11 points in the half.

 

While Fisher scored six of Niagara’s first eight points of the second half, Kansas made three consecutive three-pointers to take a 61-35 lead at 17:07. .

 

Fisher scored eight-straight Niagara points during one stretch late in the second half.

 

Kansas advances to play the winner of the Villanova/Kentucky contest in the NCAA Tournament’s second round Sunday.
