MOON TOWNSHIP, PA., - Senior captain Matt Caruana (Orono, Ont.) reached the 100 career point milestone tonight with two goals, while the No. 19 Niagara Purple Eagles shutout Robert Morris 4-0, Friday, at RMU Island Sports Center.
Caruana started off the scoring action tonight in the first period after a pair of passes from deep in the zone off the sticks of Vince Rocco (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Kyle Rogers (Erie, Pa.). The Purple Eagles first goal of the game came with only five seconds remaining in a Niagara power play, marking Caruana’s sixth goal of the season. This point paired with an empty-net goal late in the third period puts No. 19 at 100 points on his career, becoming the ninth member of the illustrious group.
“It is a huge honor to reach the 100-point mark,” said Caruana. “A lot of great players are part of the club, and I couldn't have made it there without the help of my teammates.”
Juliano Pagliero (Dalroy, Alb.) recorded his third career shutout in the win, making 45 saves on the night.
The boys in purple then went on to record two more goals during the second period. The second goal of the game, and his first for the season, came off the stick of Jim Burichin (Strongsville, Oh.) off a pass from Armando Scarlato (Toronto, Ont.) from behind the Robert Morris net after receiving a pass fed from Tyler Gotto (Calgary, Alb.).
Ted Cook (Hogansburg, N.Y.) ended his brief cold streak tonight with a crisp shot from the top of the circles, sailing over RMU goalie Christian Boucher’s right shoulder. Cook’s goal marks his first since traveling to Holy Cross on Oct. 13. Travis Anderson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) picked up his first assist of the season on the goal.
“It was another great road effort for the team and I am very pleased for Matt Caruana reaching 100 points,” said head coach Dave Burkholder. “Again he played like a senior captain. Juliano Pagliero played absolutely perfect tonight.”
The Purple Eagles hit the ice again Saturday when they finish up their road series at Robert Morris.
