JERSEY, CITY, N.J. - Head coach Susan Clements and the Niagara volleyball team (8-19, 6-12 MAAC) ended their season in style, with a 3-1 victory over Saint Peter's, Sunday, 26-30, 30-22, 30-25, 30-25. The Purple Eagles had three players with double-digit kill totals for the second-straight game, giving the first-year head coach her eighth victory of the year, doubling last season's win total.
"It was a great finish to a season of rebuilding," Clements said. "The seniors played great today, and all of them really contributed. To end the last three weeks at .500 was such a positive vision for the future."
The victory was the third road win of the season and second in conference play, allowing the Purple Eagles to finish the season in eighth place in the MAAC. Niagara rode strong defense and aggressive serving to the four-set win.
Senior Raelean Rush (Amherst, N.Y.) ended her collegiate career with a match-high 22 kills, becoming just the fourth Purple Eagle to ever reach the 1,000 kill plateau. Her 1,016 kills rank fourth all-time, while her senior total of 372 ranks eighth on the school's single season chart.
Mallory Boron (Lockport, N.Y.) had 46 assists in the win. The senior setter finishes her career with 2,332 helpers, which is good for fourth all-time. Boron now holds the third- and fourth-best single season totals after her 2007 total of 941 came in at third on the list.
Maurin Lawrence (Corfu, N.Y.) added 10 kills and four blocks in her final contest. Classmate Lindsay Kriger (Yorkton, Sask.) came off the bench to record some key kills, while Sara Mancini (Lancaster, N.Y.) had a match-high 27 digs. Mancini also owns two single-season top-five totals with her 2007 total (448-4th) and 2006 total (459-3rd).
Junior Nicole Piette (Lockport, N.Y.) added 16 kills for the Purple Eagles. Lauren Costello (Webster, N.Y.) finished her rookie campaign with the fourth-most blocks in a single season (102). The freshman led the MAAC in blocks this season.
