Volleyball Falls At Manhattan, 3-1

Nicole Piette

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The volleyball team (7-18, 5-11 MAAC) was defeated by Manhattan College (5-23, 4-12 MAAC), Saturday in a tight four-set match at Draddy Gym, 31-29, 18-30, 34-32, 30-25. The Purple Eagles recorded double-digit kill totals in the loss.

Seniors Maurin Lawrence (Corfu, N.Y.) and Raelean Rush (Amherst, N.Y.) had 15 and 13 kills, respectively, but junior Nicole Piette (Lockport, N.Y.) had a match-high 16 kills. Behind the trio, Niagara attacked at a .184 clip, but that wasn't enough in the close match.

"This was one of the hardest fought matches that we have played all year," head coach Susan Clements said, "and I think that the scores showed that. There were times when we created some holes and were able to dig out of them, but there were times when were couldn't. If we could have blocked just a little bit better, we would have come out on top."

Mallory Boron (Lockport, N.Y.) handed out 43 assists in the loss, while classmate Sara Mancini (Lancaster, N.Y.) had a team-high 26 digs for the Purple Eagles. Freshman Lauren Costello (Webster, N.Y.) had eight kills and five total blocks.

The Purple Eagle wrap up their season with a match at Saint Peter's, Sunday at 2 p.m.
