NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – A double-double (11 kills and 10 digs) by Buffalo’s Jenna Mape fueled the Bulls (11-5) to a 30-26-30-22, 30-26 non-conference volleyball victory over Niagara University (2-6) Tuesday night at the Gallagher Center.
Niagara was led by sophomore Nicole Piette (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) who had nine kills and hit .353 in the match.
Both teams traded five-point runs in the first game and kept battling to a 22-22 tie. The Bulls then took advantage of a block and two Niagara hitting errors to open a 25-22 lead. The Bulls then rolled to the 30-26 win behind the play of Alyssa Fitchette, who recorded three kills in that run.
After Niagara used two kills each by senior Annie Wachob (Buffalo, N.Y./Mount St. Mary’s) and junior Lindsay Kriger (Yorkton, Sask.) to open an 8-5 lead, Buffalo scored seven-straight points on its way to a 15-9 lead. Mape led the way with seven kills in game two as Buffalo recorded the 30-22 win.
Behind the serve of senior Jessica Piscitelli (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Niagara opened a 10-3 lead. Piscitelli had three of her match-high four aces in that run to give her 30 aces this season, surpassing her previous single-season best of 28 set in the 2003 season. The Bulls responded with two five-point runs to take a 13-11 lead. Niagara used two kills by junior Maurin Lawrence (Corfu, N.Y./Notre Dame) and kill by Kriger for an 18-15 lead. The teams then traded runs until the Bulls tied the game, 25-25. The Bulls then used a block and a Mape kill for a 27-25 lead. UB won the match on an ace serve by Nikki Morzenti.
Piscitelli and junior Sara Mancini (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) each had 10 digs to lead Niagara.
The Purple Eagles return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Rider.
