Soccer Finishes Third in Niagara Soccer Classic on Late Goal

Junior Christina Langrell

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Senior Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) of the Niagara University women’s soccer team blasted a shot past Cornell University keeper Carlyn Swensen off a break away in the 88th minute to secure a Purple Eagle victory in the Niagara Soccer Classic Sunday. The win improves Niagara’s record to 3-2-0 and drops Cornell’s record to 1-2-1 on the season.

"Overall we didn’t play well today, but at least we showed heart and determination and fought to find a way to win," Purple Eagle head coach Peter Veltri said.

Junior Natalie Frost (Elmira, N.Y.) picked up her third assists of the season when she played a lead ball to Montgomery for the break-away opportunity.

In the first period, Cornell University’s Caitlin Oliver scored in the 13th minute giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. On a Bears’ free kick, Oliver and a Niagara player both headed the ball backwards towards Purple Eagle keeper Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) who knocked the ball down over the line resulting in a Cornell goal.

Niagara junior Christina Langrell (Tillsonburg, Ont.) tied the game on her first goal of the season when she scored on a rebound off a header from sophomore Aisha Eversley (Mississauga, Ont.) in the 47th minute. Eversley was credited with an assist.

Stephens finished with eight saves and Swensen seven.

Niagara finished third place in the Classic, while Central Michigan University defeated Canisius College, 3-1, to win the Classic and remain undefeated (6-0-0).

The Purple Eagles return to action Sept. 15 when they travel to Robert Morris for a 2 p.m. game.
