Women’s Soccer Downs Albany, 4-1

ALBANY – The one-two punch of junior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) and sophomore Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.) struck again to help the Niagara University women’s soccer team (2-1-0) to a 4-1 victory over the University of Albany (0-3)Wednesday at Varsity Field.

Bisnott and Gartley each netted goals while junior Natalie Frost (Elmira, N.Y.), sophomore Caitlin Long (Fort Collins, Colo.) and senior Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) each had assists. Freshman keeper Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) recorded three saves for her second win of the season.

"It tended to be an ugly game on our part this afternoon," head coach Peter Veltri said. "We missed a lot of shots and opportunities, but in the end we got the win and that is what counts."

The Great Danes took a 1-0 lead 33 minutes into the match when Diana Barrera dribble past a Niagara defender to score her first goal of the season. But five minutes later Gartley scored her first goal of the year on a header from Long’s corner kick.

Niagara took a 2-1 lead in the 53 minute of the game when Gartley converted on a goal-mouth scrabble off a crossing pass from Frost.

Bisnott gave the Purple Eagles a two-goal lead when she scored her fourth goal of the season on a breakaway in the 58th minute. She registered her second multiple-point game of the season in the 85th minute when she took a pass from Montgomery, putting it into the left-side of the net.

Niagara returns to Monteagle Ridge Sept. 8 when it hosts the Niagara Soccer Classic.
