RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Juniors J.R. Duffey (Fort Worth, Texas) and Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) combined for 41 points as the Niagara University Purple Eagles recorded a 67-51 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference leader Manhattan College Friday night in men’s basketball action at the Draddy Gym. The win was Niagara’s first at Draddy since an 81-78 victory Feb. 2, 2001.
Duffey, who made five three-point field goals for the second-straight game, had game-high totals of 21 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and the fourth of his career. Brown added 20 points and eight rebounds while senior James Mathis (Newark, N.J.) had his third double-double of the year and fifth of his career with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Purple Eagles, 8-12, 5-7 MAAC, closed the half with a 12-2 run over the final 6:55 to take a 27-25 halftime lead. Brown scored seven points during that run while Duffey added five.
Niagara then opened the second half with the nine-straight points as Duffey hit two three-pointers and Mathis converted a conventional three-point play. Mathis capped a 48-18 run with a jump shot at 4:45 left in the contest to give Niagara a 63-41 lead, its biggest of the game.
Niagara made 52 percent (13 of 25) of its second-half field goal attempts. The Purple Eagles also sank 16 of 17 free throws.
Manhattan, which was led to its lowest point total of the season, was led by Arturo Dubois’ 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Jaspers fall to 13-7 and 9-3.
Sophomore guard Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) had a game-high seven assists.
Niagara plays Fairfield University at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Bridgeport, Conn.
