Saint Peter’s College Rally Downs Niagara University, 64-46

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Saint Peter’s College used a 16-3 outburst midway through the second half to power the Peahens to a 64-46 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory over Niagara University Sunday at the Gallagher Center.

The Peahens (11-14, 7-9 MAAC) were led by Tyonna Vance’s 16 points and 11 points from Khalisha Lewis. Vance scored four of her points during the 10-0 run that gave the Peahens a 49-34 lead with 8:34 remaining.

Niagara (3-22, 2-14 MAAC) was led by freshman guard Erika Harris (Gahanna, Ohio) as she scored 11 points. Junior guard Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.) added 10 points. Wilson scored Niagara’s first seven points as she hit a three-point field goal to get Niagara on the board and later was fouled while making another three-pointer. She made the foul shot for a four-point play that gave Niagara a 7-5 with 16:38 left in the first half.

After Niagara took a 9-5 lead, Saint Peter’s responded with a 6-0 to take an 11-9 lead when Lewis sank a layup. The teams traded baskets until the Peahens closed the half with an 11-5 run for a 30-24 lead at the half.

In the second half, Niagara’s Cathy Rutter (Old Bridge, N.J.) scored back-to-back baskets before Wilson sank another three-pointer to bring the Purple Eagles within two, 33-31, with 16:54 remaining. Saint Peter’s then went on a 16-3 run to take a 49-34 lead when Kristen Hood scored with 8:34 left.

Niagara, which suffered from a 6-of-18 performance from the free-throw line, plays Loyola College Thursday in Baltimore, Md.
