NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Marist College (10-16, 7-9) used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Niagara University (4-20, 2-15), 30-19, 30-25, 30-26, Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action.
Marist was led by Alexandra Schultze’s 11 kills. Jaime Kenworthy added 10 kills while Sally Hanson and Christy Lukes recorded nine and eight kills, respectively.
Niagara was led by junior Raelean Rush (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) and sophomore Nicole Piette (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) as each recorded 12 kills. Junior Maurin Lawrence (Corfu, N.Y./Notre Dame) added 10 kills. Junior Sara Mancini (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had a match-high 18 digs while Rush added 12 digs.
Marist held a 19-18 lead before scoring nine-straight points to take a 28-18 lead in game one. Kenworthy, who had two kills during that run, added another to give the Red Foxes the 30-19 win.
Rush had the hot hand early for Niagara in game two, recording seven kills, before Niagara tied the game, 20-20, on a Piette kill. Marist then scored five of the next six points for a 25-21 lead before the Purple Eagles scored back-to-back points. Marist then used a block and took advantage of three Niagara hitting errors to pull away for the 30-25 win.
In game three, a Rush kill tied the game, 23-23. Niagara then took a 26-24 lead on two kills by senior Annie Wachob (Buffalo, N.Y./Mount St. Mary’s). Marist’s Hanson recorded two kills, including the game-winner, to power the Red Foxes.
The Purple Eagles close the regular season Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. against Canisius at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo.
