NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Junior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) scored twice Friday afternoon to help the Niagara University women’s soccer team (9-6-1, 5-2-1) shutout Iona College (3-11-4, 1-5-2), 2-0.
Bisnott put the Purple Eagles on the scoreboard in the 56th minute when her shot from 20 yards out beat Iona keeper Suzanne Baldissard.
Bisnott’s team-leading 16th goal of the season came in the 66th minute when sophomore Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.) crossed the ball to the front of the net and Bisnott stuck it by Baldissard.
"The first half we played smart and didn't rush things," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. "The second half we put the pressure on them and capitalized on our opportunities."
Freshman Sara Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) and the Purple Eagle defense picked up their second shutout of the season. Stephens made five saves in net.
In the playoff picture, Niagara is currently in tied for second place with Siena with 16 points. The Saints and Fairfield University (14 points) both play later tonight.
Niagara returns to action Sunday when it plays at Manhattan College at noon.
