Gartley Nets Two in Women’s Soccer 4-3 Loss

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.) netted two goals for the Niagara University (7-6-1, 3-2-1) women’s soccer team in a 4-3 loss Sunday against Siena College (8-6-2, 5-2-1) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition.

Gartley scored her first goal in the fifth minute of the first half with a shot over the top of Siena goalkeeper Patti Carroll. The forward received a pass from sophomore Caitlin Long (Fort Collins, Colo.) who now has five assists this season. Gartley’s second goal came after a corner kick when she placed a loose ball in the box over the defense and into the back of the net in the 16th minute, giving Niagara a 3-1 lead. Gartley’s two goals give her 13 this season and 30 in her career, placing her fifth overall in career goals, surpassing Amber Hutton (29, 1992-95).

The Purple Eagles’ second goal was scored by junior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) in the 10th minute when she connected with a cross from midfielder Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). Bisnott now has 14 goals this season and 42 in her career. Lawrence has three assists this season.

With less than one minute left in the game Siena midfielder Laren Stys secured the Saints’ 4-3 win when she deflected a pass from Alyssa Thayer into the net.

Niagara keeper Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) recorded six saves and is now 7-6-1 overall. Saints’ keeper Patti Carroll recorded six saves.

The Purple Eagles return to action when they face Iona College Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. in New Rochelle, N.Y.
