NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Junior guard Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.) scored all 10 of her points in the second half to lead Niagara University to a 63-59 victory over Fairfield Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at the Gallagher Center.
Wilson scored six of her points in the final 63 seconds to lead Niagara (3-15, 2-7 MAAC). Freshman guard Erika Harris (Gahanna, Ohio) led the Purple Eagles with 13 points and five assists. Fairfield (7-10, 4-4) was led by Lauren Groom’s 16 points. Cara Murphy added 11 points for the Stags.
Harris scored 10 of her points in the first half as Niagara held a 23-21 lead at the break. The Purple Eagles pushed their lead to 10, 36-26, on an inside basket by senior center Jennifer Roueche (Niwot, Colo.) with 14:31 to play. Fairfield rallied to take a 52-51 lead after a Groom basket with 3:07 to play.
Roueche, who had game-high totals with 12 rebounds, five blocked shots and a career-high tying three steals, again hit a layup to take a 53-52 lead with 2:54 remaining. After a Fairfield miss, sophomore guard Michelle Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) sank two free throws for a 55-52 lead at 2:34.
Fairfield’s Murphy hit a running jump shot to bring the Niagara lead to one, 55-54. Wilson responded by hitting a three-point field goal from the top of the key with 1:03 remaining for a 58-54 Niagara lead.
Harris sank two foul shots before Murphy sank a three-point field goal from the corner to cut Niagara’s lead to 60-57 with 33 seconds left. Wilson, who scored 11 points Friday night vs. Iona, then proceeded to sink three free throws for Niagara’s final points.
Niagara returns to action Thursday when it travels to Loudonville, N.Y., to take on Siena College at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Center.
