NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Iona College used a late 8-0 run to break a 57-57 tie and cruised to a 67-61 victory over Niagara University in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Friday night at the Gallagher Center. Iona improves to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in the MAAC with the win while Niagara is 2-15, 1-7 MAAC.
Niagara’s Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.) sank a three-point field goal to tie the score at 57 with 2:35 remaining. Iona then took a 59-57 lead on a basket by Martina Weber with 2:17 to play. Niagara missed a shot on its next possession before Iona’s Jessica Anger sank two foul shots with 1:24 left for a 61-57 lead. Anger’s free throws were part of six consecutive made free throws by Iona as the Gaels took a 65-57 lead with 28.1 seconds remaining.
Wilson sank to free throws with 21.6 seconds left to snap the Gaels’ run. Iona’s Lauren DeFalco sank two of four free throws to provide the final points for Iona while Michelle Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) made a layup for Niagara’s final points.
Manfredi led Niagara with 14 points. Wilson had a season-high 11 points in a reserve role while senior Jennifer Roueche (Niwot, Colo.) scored 12 points, also a season best. Sophomore Sarah Wilson (St. Catharines, Ont.) had nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Weber led Iona with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Tiara Headen and Toni Horvath scored 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Iona had a 30-25 lead at halftime and used a 16-9 run to open the second half for a 46-34 lead with 12:26 to play on a Horvath three-point field goal. Niagara got back-to-back three-point field goals by junior Jessi Tomasin (Hamilton, Ont.) to bring the Purple Eagles to four, 46-42. Sophomore Cathy Rutter (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Roueche each scored inside baskets to tie the score at 46 before Roueche gave Niagara a 48-46 lead with 7:36 remaining.
The teams traded baskets until Chantelle Wilson’s three-point field goal tied the game at 57.
Niagara faces Fairfield at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gallagher Center.

- With tonight’s 67-61 loss, Niagara’s is now 2-15 overall and 1-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Purple Eagles are also 2-3 at home for the season.

- With 12 points tonight, senior Jennifer Roueche recorded her season high in points. Her pervious season high was eight against Syracuse on Nov. 23, 2005.
- Chantelle Wilson registered season highs in points (11), rebounds (5) and three-pointers (3).
- Manfredi posted her third consecutive double-figure scoring game with a game-high 14 points.
- For the second game in a row Niagara had three players with double digits. Manfredi led the team with 14 points, Roueche had 12 and Wilson had 11 points.
