Marist Downs Niagara, 70-56


Sophomore Sarah Wilson scored a career-high 17 points Saturday night.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore center Sarah Wilson (St. Catharines, Ont.) scored a career-high 17 points but the Niagara University women’s basketball team lost, 70-56, to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference leader Marist College Saturday night at the McCann Center.

Niagara (2-13, 1-5 MAAC) also got 11 points from sophomore Michelle Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) and 10 points from junior Jessi Tomasin (Hamilton, Ont.).

Marist (10-4, 5-0 MAAC) used 15 first-half points from Fifi Camara and 11 points by Julianne Viana to open a 37-26 lead at the break.

The Purple Eagles cut the lead to six, 41-35, with 16:24 remaining on a Wilson three-pointer. The Red Foxes then ran off seven-straight points for a 50-35 lead on a Camara basket with 14:25 remaining. Niagara cut the lead to seven, 53-46, when a Tomasin three-pointer capped an 8-0 run with 8:57 left.

Marist went on a 17-3 run to take a 70-49 lead with 2:03 remaining. The Purple Eagles scored the game’s last seven points, Manfredi scoring the last four.

Niagara will face Canisius College in the Koessler Center Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
