NIAGARA UN., N.Y. -- After playing 14 consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games, the Niagara University men’s basketball team (17-7, 12-4) will take a break and play its last non-league contest of the season when it travels to Akron, Ohio, to meet the University of Akron (15-7, 9-5) Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Akron game is a non-conference game that comes from the pool of teams that were under consideration for the BracketBuster Saturday package of games. The game is one of 21 pool games Saturday, promoting teams in "mid-major" conferences and pitting NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other.
Niagara won its eighth game in nine outings with a 113-101 overtime victory over Canisius Wednesday. The win kept it in first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings.
Akron comes into the game with a modest two-game winning streak. The Zips won at Ohio, 69-49, Wednesday.
