NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Senior Eva Cunningham (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) scored a career- and game-high 33 points to help the Niagara University women’s basketball team (13-9, 8-5) snap a three-game losing streak with a 78-70 victory over Iona College (4-18, 2-11) Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game at the Mulcahy Center.
The Purple Eagle point guard was 11 of 18 from the field, 4 of 5 from three-point range and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. Cunningham also dished out a game-high six assists.
Sophomore Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.) came off the bench for 16 points, including 4 of 7 from beyond the three-point arc. Classmate Shaunna Ambrose (McKees Rock, Pa.) added 12 points and five assists.
After leading by only two points at halftime, 38-36, Niagara used an 18-0 run over a six-minute span to take a 56-47 lead at 12:56. Cunningham scored 12 of her 20 second-half points during the run.
Niagara extended its lead to 63-52 on a Wilson three-pointer with 8:41 remaining.
Iona got as close as six points, 70-64, with 2:41 left, but the Purple Eagles went 8 for 8 from the foul line to secure the win.
Niagara dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Gaels, 40-29.
The Purple Eagles return to action Sunday when they play at Rider at 3 p.m. The game can be seen live on Adelphia cable Channel 13 in Erie County and Channel 9 in Olean.
