NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action this weekend when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on Loyola College, Marist College and Catholic University in the H2ounds Invitational in the Mangione Aquatic Center. Competition begins at 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
Both Niagara squads will face their toughest competition of the year as Marist swept the 2005 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship and the Loyola squads finished third.
The Purple Eagle men’s team will be protecting a four-meet winning streak, a 4-1 overall record and 3-0 mark in MAAC meets. Niagara beat Saint Peter’s College, 80-24, and Canisius College, 72-33, in its last outing on Nov. 12.
Loyola is 5-3 overall and 1-0 vs. league foes. In their last outing, the Greyhounds finished second in the Thomas Murphy Invitational, beating Howard and the Virginia Military Institute, but losing to Johns Hopkins.
Marist enters the meet with 3-1 overall and 2-1 MAAC records. The Red Foxes beat Iona, 135-92, in their last outing Nov. 15.
Catholic, a Division III school, snapped a two-meet losing streak with a 110-92 victory over St. Mary’s in its most recent meet. The Cardinals are 1-3 overall.
In last year’s meet at Loyola, Niagara lost to the Greyhounds, 200-120, and to Marist, 279-59.
The Niagara women’s swimming and diving team has a three-meet winning streak entering the weekend invitational and is 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the league. The Purple Eagles beat Saint Peter’s, 99-10, Manhattan, 78-30, and Canisius, 80-32, in their last meet.
Loyola is 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Greyhounds beat Fairfield, 157-86, for their MAAC win and split their most recent meet with Howard and Johns Hopkins on Nov. 12.
Marist is 4-0 overall and 3-0 vs. league opponents after beating Iona, 140.5-91.5, Fairfield, 178-106, and Rider, 127.5-115.5.
Catholic ended a two-meet losing streak with wins vs. St. Mary’s and York. The Cardinals enter this weekend’s meet 2-2 on the season.
