ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s basketball team dropped to 0-2 on the season after losing in overtime to Cornell University (1-1), 75-63, in the consolation game of the St. Bonaventure Shootout at First Arena.

After a 61-61 tie at the end of regulation, the Purple Eagles were outscored 14-2 in overtime by the Big Red. Niagara was 1-9 from the field and 0-2 from the free-throw line during the extra period.

The game reached overtime after the Purple Eagles let a three-point lead slip away with 2:43 left. Cornell got four-straight points from Jeomi Maduka to take a 61-60 lead with 1:41 remaining. Junior Shaunna Ambrose (McKees Rock, Pa./Vincentian Academy) was fouled with a second left in regulation, but made only the first of the two-shot foul before time expired.

The Purple Eagles had a one-point lead, 37-36, after halftime. Both teams shot well from the field, but Niagara’s free-throw problems continued as it was 4 of 7 in the period.

Ambrose scored a game-high 24 points and added six rebounds, three assists and four steals. Junior Toni Smalley (Thornville, Ohio/Sheridan) and sophomore Sara Prybyl (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) each chipped in 10 points.

Niagara returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Syracuse University in its home opener at 7 p.m. in the legendary Taps Gallagher Center.
