Senior Amber Niece had the game-winning goal vs. Marist Sunday.

ORLANDO – Senior Amber Niece (Port Colbourne, Ont.) scored her second penalty kick goal of the season to help the Niagara University women’s soccer team (16-2-2) advance to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship with a 2-1 overtime win against Marist College (5-12-2) Sunday afternoon at Hess Sports Field at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.

With Sunday’s victory, the No. 2 seed Purple Eagles will play No. 5 seed Fairfield University at 1 p.m. Monday. The Stags reached the championship game with a 2-1 upset-win over Loyola College.

Niece, who scored the game-winning penalty kick in Niagara’s 6-3 quarterfinal win over Canisius College on Friday, scored in the 92nd minute of the game when she put the shot into the lower left corner of the Red Foxes’ net.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, MAAC Rookie of the Year Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.) scored her team-leading 17 goal of the season to tie the game. The forward put it past goalkeeper Anna Case in the 62nd minute off a rebound from junior Emily Montgomery’s (Oshawa, Ont.) shot.

Marist struck first in the 18th minute when Jenna McCrory scored on a shot into the left corner past senior Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.).

Owings made two saves for the Purple Eagles while Case made 15 for the Red Foxes.
