Volleyball Sweeps Saint Peter’s in Conference Opener

Senior Michelle LeSouder had a team-high 18 kills vs. Saint Peter's Saturday.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Niagara University volleyball team (11-5, 1-0) extended its winning streak to six matches Saturday afternoon when it beat Saint Peter’s College (9-10, 0-1) in three games, 30-27, 30-24, 30-22, in both squads Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener. The Purple Eagles have now won the most matches since winning 13 in 1995.

Senior Michelle LeSouder (Stratford, Ont.) led Niagara with 18 kills. Classmates Stephanie Hopkins (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) and Karen Simpson (Rochester, N.Y.) added 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior Micole Daluisio (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had a match-high 17 digs.

"Our middles and right-side hitters played great," head coach Rocco Lucci said. "They followed the game plan so we passed well and were able to run the middle."

Niagara improves to 10-5 in league openers with today’s victory, and it is the second time the Purple Eagles have played the Peahens in a conference-opening weekend. The win also snapped a two-match losing streak to Saint Peter’s and gives Niagara its fifth win in the 21-match series.

The Purple Eagles concluded their two-match road swing down state when they play at Manhattan Sunday at 2 p.m.
