NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Niagara used a 9-0 run to take the lead and then added an 8-0 run to ice the Purple Eagles’ 84-73 win over Loyola College (3-16, 2-8) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center.
Senior David Brooks (Philadelphia) led the way for Niagara (13-6, 8-3) as he scored a season-high 27 points, highlighted by five three-point field goals.
Niagara trailed 66-65 with 8:29 remaining before it went on a 9-0 run for a 74-66 lead. Sophomore guard Barry Durosier (Orlando, Fla.) sank a go-ahead three-pointer and later added a layup. Seniors Juan Mendez (Montreal) and Alvin Cruz (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) also scored during the run.
Loyola cut the lead to within three points, 76-73, on a three-pointer by Freddie Stanback with 3:03 left but the Purple Eagles closed the game with an 8-0 run. Brooks scored five points in that stretch while Cruz netted the other three.
Mendez recorded his ninth-straight double-double and 12th overall of the season as he finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The forward also blocked a career-best tying five shots. Cruz had 17 points and a game-high seven assists.
Loyola was led by Sean Corrigan’s 16 points. Bernard Allen and Shane James scored 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Niagara will play Marist Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
