NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Niagara junior center Jennifer Roueche (Niwot, Colo.) set the school record with 10 blocked shots as the Purple Eagles recorded a 70-54 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory over Saint Peter’s Friday night at the Gallagher Center. The 10 blocked shots are the most recorded by an individual this season in the MAAC.
Roueche recorded the program’s first triple-double as she scored 13 points and snared 13 rebounds in the contest. The Purple Eagles, now 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the MAAC, got 29 points from senior guard Eva Cunningham (East Aurora/Iroquois).
"Our goal was to step up on the defense end and I went into the game with that mindset," Roueche said. "We went into the game with that mindset and really worked on our defense as a team tonight. I was personally excited as my family flew out to watch me play. Saint Peter’s definitely drives to the basket a lot, so I told myself to keep my hands straight up and they’ll come right into my hands."
The Purple Eagles used a 12-2 run midway in the first half to pull out to a 26-17 lead as Cunningham scored 10 of Niagara’s 12 points during that stretch. She capped the run with a three-point field goal with 6:37 left in the half. Cunningham scored 19 first-half points as the Purple Eagles built a 33-22 lead.
Roueche scored 11 of her points in the second half as Niagara pulled away for the win. The victory allowed the Purple Eagles’ to sweep the series against the Peahens for the first time in school history.
Niagara will play Marist Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Gallagher Center. Marist enters the game after defeating Canisius 65-62 Friday night.
