Niagara Women’s Soccer Drops First Game of Season

Junior Amber Niece

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s soccer team (3-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season, falling, 5-0, to St. Bonaventure (3-1-0) Sunday at the Niagara University Soccer Classic at Niagara Field.

The Bonnies were led offensively by sophomore forward Kerry O’Malley, who finished with two goals and an assist against the Purple Eagles Sunday. O’Malley, three goals and two assists in St. Bonaventure’s two weekend games, led the team with 10 shots against Niagara, threatening the Purple Eagles’ defense multiple times during the contest with her speed.

St. Bonaventure took a one-goal lead 15 minutes into the opening half when freshman Kristin Sotak volleyed in a loose ball from the top of the Niagara penalty area, beating Purple Eagles goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) high into the top-right corner.

Play continued in favor of the Bonnies following Sotak’s opening goal. St. Bonaventure capitalized from the continuous pressure on the Niagara defense in the 38th minute when junior Heather MacDougall, on a counterattack, dribbled past the Purple Eagles defenders and drove the ball high past Owings.

With the score 2-0 at half, O’Malley got behind the Purple Eagles defense in the 65th minute, slotting the ball low past Owings for her fifth goal of the season. O’Malley added her second goal of the contest just six minutes later, following up a loose ball in the Niagara box.

Freshman midfielder Jessica Bartock scored the final goal for St. Bonaventure in the 73rd minute, beating Owings to the lower-right corner of the net.

Shots were in favor of the Bonnies, 27-11.

St. Bonaventure sophomore goalkeeper Lisa Eberhart, who did not allow a goal in the Bonnies two games at the invitational, made seven saves for her third shutout win of the season. Owings made six saves in the loss.

Niagara juniors Amber Niece (Port Colbourne, Ont.) and Kelly Flaherty (Hastings, N.Y.), along with sophomore Jenna Sporta (Oakville, Ont.) were named to the all-tournament team following the game.

The Purple Eagles travel to Duquesne Friday at 7 p.m., looking to regroup following the worst loss since a 5-0 defeat to Loyola Sept. 24, 2000.
