Women's Basketball Team Battles Canisius for First Place in the MAAC Wednesday

Senior Jessica Kemp and her fellow seniors will be looking for their sixth-straight win over Canisius Wednesday.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- Western New Yorkers, strap on your seat belts, its rivalry week for women’s college basketball. Niagara University (14-7, 8-4) and Canisius College (13-8, 8-4) will be battling for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference when they play Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center.

Emotions will be running high as the cross-town rivals both sit atop the MAAC standings with Marist after both teams beat the Red Foxes this past weekend. Both Niagara and Canisius have split their series with Marist and the winner of Wednesday’s game will be in first place with Marist until the Red Foxes play Manhattan Thursday.

Niagara enters the contest with a three-game winning streak that includes a 65-49 victory over the Jaspers on Feb. 8.

The hottest team in the league, Canisius carries a six-game winning streak into Wednesday’s tilt. The Golden Griffins beat Marist, 64-51, Feb. 8.

Wednesday’s game is the 59th meeting between the two teams. Canisius holds a six-game edge, 32-26, in the all-time series.
