Niagara Women’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw With Iona

Junior Katy Owings made three saves in the scoreless draw.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s soccer team (7-5-1, 2-2-1) played to a scoreless tie with Iona College (7-7-2, 3-2-1) Sunday at Mazzella Field, on the campus of Iona.

Outshooting the Gaels, 15-13, in the draw, Niagara’s best scoring opportunity came in the 35th minutes when freshman Natalie Frost (Elmira. N.Y.) open-net shot was saved on the goal line by a recovering Jessica Martin in the Iona net.

Both teams continued to attack in the second half, with sophomore Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) missing a one-on-one opportunity in the 70th minute, as Martin stopped the scoring chance. Iona’s best scoring opportunity came from leading-scorer Catharine Nathans early in the second half. Nathans shot beat Niagara goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) but hit the cross bar, keeping the game tied at 0-0.

Martin made eight saves for the Gaels in the draw, extending Iona’s home unbeaten streak to nine games. Owings made three saves for her third shutout of the season.

Niagara continues Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play next weekend, hosing its final home series of the season. The Purple Eagles host Manhattan Friday at 3 p.m. and Saint Peter’s Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to both games is free.
