Niagara’s Winning Streak Snapped at Manhattan


Senior James Reaves had 17 points and 11 rebounds Friday night vs. Manhattan.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Luis Flores scored 32 points to help lead Manhattan College (14-4, 9-1) to a 65-62 victory over Niagara University (12-6, 6-3) Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Draddy Gymnasium on the Manhattan campus.

Flores’ fourth three-pointer of the night at 1:58 left in the game gave Manhattan its first lead of the game, 61-60. Niagara’s Juan Mendez (Montreal, Quebec) scored his only basket of the half to give Niagara its last lead of the contest, 62-61, with 49 seconds left.

Manhattan then took the lead for good on a pair of David Holmes free throws. Niagara turned the ball over on its next possession and senior Tremmell Darden (Las Vegas) was forced to foul Peter Mulligan. Mulligan missed the front end of the one-and-one, but the Purple Eagles failed to score on their next possession. Niagara went to Mendez again in the paint, but a jump ball was called when the junior attempted his shot with five second left.

Flores made two free throws with two seconds left, but Niagara had a good look at a three-pointer at the buzzer but junior David Brooks’(Philadelphia) attempt bounced off the back of the rim.

Senior James Reaves (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) led Niagara with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the forwards three consecutive double-double and 25th of his career. Also in double digits in scoring where Mendez and Darden with 12 points each and Brooks with 10 points.

Niagara shot 52.6 percent from the field in the second half, but were out-scored, 34-26. Manhattan out-rebounded the Purple Eagles, 32-27, and forced 16 turnovers.

Niagara returns to action Sunday when it plays Iona at 2 p.m. in the Mulcahy Center on the Iona College campus.
