Niagara Women’s Soccer Loses to Lehigh

Rosie Luzak scored Niagara's lone goal.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer (3-5-1, 1-1) team fell 2-1, to Lehigh Sunday afternoon at Lehigh Stadium to finish its three-game road stint. Niagara’s lone goal of the afternoon was scored by senior forward Rosie Luzak (Youngstown, N.Y.) six minutes into the game.

"It was a diffecult loss because we controlled the entire game from beginning to end. We moved the ball well and had many opportunities, but just couldn't seem to get any luck" coach Peter Veltri said. "Even though the final result was not what we were looking for the team continues to play well."

Niagara got on the scoreboard first as Luzak got loose on a breakaway. The Mountain Hawks goaltender Erin Iwaskiewicz came out to challenge her, but Luzak managed to keep the ball away from her as Iwaskiewicz went to the ground. Facing the open net the Youngstown, N.Y. native scored to give Niagara the lead, 1-0.

Lehigh scored two second half goals to come from behind. Freshman Karilyn Anderson tied the game for the Mountain Hawks in the 53rd minute and Lehigh took the lead when Lauren Calabrese scored on a breakaway.

Iwaskiewwicz got the win in goal for the Mountain Hawks with one save. Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) took the loss for the Purple Eagles with 10 saves.

The Purple Eagles return to action Saturday when they face Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne at 1 p.m. at Niagara Field. Admission is free.
