ROCHESTER, N.Y. – David Brooks scored a game-high 23 points to power Niagara to a 90-71 non-conference victory over Bucknell Saturday night in front of 1,690 fans at Blue Cross Arena at War Memorial.
Brooks, a junior from Philadelphia, Pa., made a career high six three-point field goals - five in the first half. He was one of five Purple Eagles to score in double figures as fellow starters James Reaves (Rochester/Edison Tech HS) scored 14 points, Alvin Cruz (Rio Pedras, Puerto Rico) and Tremmell Darden (Las Vegas, Nev.) each netted 13 points and Juan Mendez (Montreal, Quebec) added 10 points. Reaves sported a double-double as snared a game-high 13 rebounds.
Reaves, who scored the Purple Eagles’ first points with a three-point field goal, gave Niagara an 11-point lead, 30-19, at 6:26 of the first half with a jump shot.
After Bucknell cut it to one, 30-29, after a basket by Donald Brown, the Purple Eagles closed the half with a 16-1 run. Reaves scored five points in that run while Cruz netted four.
In the second half, Niagara never let the lead get within single digits as it shot 70 percent (14 of 20) in the final 20 minutes. The Purple Eagles took a 22-point lead, 85-63, on a basket by Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.).
The Purple Eagles, who made 11 three-point field goals in the game, also forced Bucknell into 22 turnovers. Cruz had a career- and game-high five steals to go with five assists. Niagara also had a 37-23 edge in rebounds.
Niagara, 2-0, opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play vs. Canisius at 7 p.m. Wednesday at HSBC Arena.
