Niagara Women's Soccer Wins In Overtime

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY– The Niagara University women’s soccer team (6-5-3, 4-0-1) beat the Fairfield Stags 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.  A penalty kick by Amber Niece (Port Colborne, Ont.) in the 4th minute of overtime gave the Purple Eagles the win. 

"This was a great win for our program," head coach Peter Veltri said. Today's win showed that with such a young team on any given day we can win. The win puts us in a great situation for the rest of the season."

 Fairfield took a 1-0 lead when Maureen Miller headed a Lindsey Pulito shot past Niagara’s Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.).

 Niagara rebounded with a tying goal in the 26th minute of play when Michelle Del Monte (Mississauga, Ont.) buried a rebound past Katie Ely.

 Niece was fouled in 4th minute of overtime and as a result was given a penalty kick. Niece capitalized scoring in the bottom left corner for a 2-1 victory.

 The Purple Eagles' Owings made four saves allowing one goal. Fairfield’s Ely made four saves and allowed two goals.

 The Purple Eagles return to action Oct. 24 vs. Saint Peter’s.  Game time is 3 p.m. at Jaroschak Field on the campus of Saint Peter's University.
