NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Niagara University senior Rosie Luzak (Youngstown, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals as the Purple Eagles (5-5-3, 3-0-1) defeated Iona College 2-0 in women’s soccer action Friday afternoon at Niagara Field. The game marked Niagara’s third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season, keeping them undefeated in league play.
“The team played extremely well today,” Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. “We did a great job keeping possession and dictating the play of the game.”
Luzak’s first goal of the game came when Inga Haedicke (Haliburton, Ont.) gave Luzak a breakaway pass and Luzak scored in the bottom left corner 14 minutes into the game.
It appeared Luzak got her second goal of the game in the 83rd minute of play when she headed a Lora te Boekhorst (Dundas, Ont.) shot into the net. The referee in turn waved the goal off due to an offside. That didn’t stop Niagara, just two minutes later Luzak and the Purple Eagles came storming back when the Youngstown, N.Y., native deflected a Kristin Muoio (Youngstown, N.Y.) shot into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Niagara goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) posted 10 saves in her third shutout of the season. Iona goalkeeper Ticiana DiCarlo recorded eight saves in 90 minutes of action. The Purple Eagles outshot Iona, 10-8.
The Purple Eagles return to action Sunday afternoon when they face Fairfield at 1 p.m. at Niagara Field. Admission is free.
