NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team got its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season with a decisive, 5-2, victory over Marist Friday night at Marist Field. Scoring was led by freshman forward Michelle Del Monte (Mississauga, Ont.), who netted two goals in the winning effort. The Red Foxes fall to 1-9-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the MAAC, while Niagara improves to 4-5-2 on the year and 2-0-0 in league play.
“Anytime you can get a convincing win on the road it is great,” said fifth-year head coach Peter Veltri. “It is great for the team’s confidence and will help prepare us for our next seven games”.
The Purple Eagles struck first, with Del Monte scoring her first of two goals 15 minutes into the contest. The Red Foxes answered eight minutes later when Courtney Moore scored on a header off a corner kick by Kathleen Murray. Del Monte gave Niagara a score 2-1 lead four minutes later.
The Red Foxes Struck first in the second half of play, as Laura Fil scored off a deflection in the 66th minute of play. That would prove to be all of the offense for the Red Foxes on this night. Niagara tallied three unanswered goals in the last 24 minutes of play. Senior forward, Rosie Luzak (Youngstown, N.Y.) scored the game-winner at 69:57. Midfielder, Jenni Greiner (Syracuse, N.Y.) got her first goal of the year in the 77th minute of play, and freshman Jenna Sporta (Oakville, Ont.) added an insurance goal with just under two minutes to play in the game.
Luzak finished the game with a goal and an assist for the Purple Eagles.
Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) started in goal and played 85 minutes, making two saves and allowing both Marist goals. Melissa Himes (Fulton, N.Y.) played the final five minutes of the game and made two saves.
Niagara returns to action Sunday, Oct.12, when it travels to MAAC foe Siena for a 12 p.m. start.
