Four Purple Eagles Named To All-MAAC Teams

Stephanie Gartley

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team landed four Purple Eagles to All-MAAC teams announced at the 2008 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship in Albany, N.Y. Senior forward Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.) made first team, while juniors Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) and Alyssa Pollock (Liverpool, N.Y.) earned second team spots; freshman defender Jennifer Kimoto (Scarborough, Ont.) was named to the all-rookie team.

This marks the second straight season that Niagara has had at least one player on the first, second and rookie teams. The Purple Eagles have also accomplished this feat in the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Gartley ended her stellar career at Niagara ranking fourth all-time in career goals with 50 and fifth all-time in career points with 121, while leading the 2008 Purple Eagles in goals (12), assists (5) and points (29). She finished second in the MAAC in points and tied for second in goals with the 2008 MAAC Player of the Year Ahna Johnson.

Gartley has made an All-MAAC team in all four years at Niagara. She was named 2005 MAAC Rookie of the Year and made First-Team All-MAAC, was Second-Team All-MAAC in 2006 and 2007 and was named to the 2008 Preseason All-MAAC Team.

Greco and Pollock made their debut on an All-MAAC Team.

Alyssa Pollock

Greco emerged as the team’s second-best scoring option. The education major scored seven goals, including several from long range efforts, and had six assists to finish the season with 20 points. Pollock was a solid defender in the Niagara’s rearguard. She started in all 19 games for the Purple and White and was in charge of shutting down the opposition best striker.

Jennifer Kimoto showed great versatility as a defender this season. The freshman started the season on the right, but switched to left back towards the end of the season. She also started in every game this season.

Niagara placed 11 Purple Eagles on the 2008 MAAC All- Academic Team for third most in the conference, one behind Iona and Marist. Gartley, Greco and Pollock were the team along with teammates Courtney Davies (Las Vegas, Nev.), Jamie Giangreco (Penfield, N.Y.), Caitlin Kilkenny (Seville, Ohio), Emily McElroy (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Molly McKeown (Olean, N.Y.), Kathryn Potter (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.), Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) and Gabrielle Wilson (Tonawanda, N.Y.).

To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
