Before Niagara
From Pawling High School (Pawling, NY) he was captain of his cross country and spring track teams his senior year, in addition to captaining his varsity basketball team (junior and senior). In his senior year (only his second season of track and field), Matt broke Pawling’s school record in the 1600 (4:27.16) and 2k steeple (6:29.9); in addition to placing in the top-10 of every race except one, including: 1^st in the Joe Wynne Somers Lions Club Invite (3200), 1^st in the Section 1 Class C Championship (3k steeple, 3200), and 4^th in the Cornwall Steeplefest where he broke 10minutes (9:58). In his senior year of cross country, he achieved All-League, as he and his team qualified/competed at the NYSPHSAA State Championship (where he placed 32^nd) in addition to the Nike XC National NY Regional (where he placed 7^th in the Open Division).
