Niagara University, N.Y. - Niagara Softball falls to Iona after they recorded eight hits but eventually fell 6-3 at the Niagara Softball Field in Niagara University, N.Y.
Niagara kicked off the game on the board first in the bottom of the first as Donnalea Barnett scored off a wild pitch to allow the Purple Eagles to take an early 1-0 lead over Iona.
In the bottom of the third Hailey Cenname singled then advanced to second on an error by the Gaels left fielder which would bring
Carmella Phelan to score unearned.
In the fourth, Iona would tie the game as Brooke Acker doubled down the left field line to bring home Brianna Fischer to cut the Purple Eagles lead in half. Later in the same inning Hailey Guerrero doubled to left center to drive Marylou Piazza home to knot the contest at two apiece. The Gaels would take the lead as Guerrero stole third then scored off a throwing error for an unearned run to make the game 3-2.
In the fifth, Fischer recorded a sac fly which allowed Alivia Lichtner to score. Guerrero doubled to left field to score Acker and Sara Pina to move the game to a four-run lead for Iona.
The Purple and White got back on the board in the sixth as Adriana Hills singled up to right center to score Alessandra Carter to move the game to 6-3, where Iona became victorious.
Gianna Graber got the start in the circle as she pitched 4.2 innings as she saw 23 batters as she punched out three. Abbey Steen came in for the final 2.1 innings as she faced 11 batters.
