ORLANDO, Fla. — North Dakota (12-3) dominated Niagara (3-5) in men's tennis Wednesday, securing a 6-1 victory at their neutral-site match in Orlando.
The Fighting Hawks controlled doubles play, winning two of three matches to claim the doubles point. Andrew Hayduke II and Ethan Terry made quick work of Niagara's
Mikolaj Kowal and
Gurustat Makkar with a 6-1 victory, while Ange-Kevin Koua and Leandro Zgraggen defeated
Tanner Bedard and
Vid Maric 6-3.
Niagara's lone bright spot in doubles came from Jose Maria Garcia and
Trevor Masi, who defeated Christos Alex and Leo Galliano 6-1.
In singles competition, Niagara struggled to gain momentum. The Purple Eagles' only singles victory came from
Rohan Srivastava, who outlasted North Dakota's Christos Alex in a three-set marathon that included two tiebreakers (6-7, 6-4, 12-10).
Two matches ended in retirement, with North Dakota's Leandro Zgraggen retiring against Niagara's
Tanner Bedard after splitting the first two sets, and Ange-Kevin Koua retiring against Niagara's
Trevor Masi while leading in the third set.
North Dakota took control with straightforward victories in the remaining singles matches. Andrew Hayduke II defeated
Vid Maric 6-4, 6-2, Leo Galliano overpowered
Mikolaj Kowal 6-2, 6-3, and Ethan Terry rallied past Jose Maria Garcia 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
The loss drops Niagara to 3-5 on the season, while North Dakota improves to 12-3.
