Columbus, OH – Niagara Men's hockey opened the 2024-25 season on Sunday with an exhibition game against Ohio State. Ohio took the game 3-2 in overtime.
How it Happened
Period One
The score remained even through the first eight minutes of the first period until Ohio State found the back of the net at 8:40 to take the lead over Niagara.
Three minutes later, the Purple Eagles tied the game at one thanks to
Braden Doyle, who scored at the 10:50 mark. Lars Rodne and
Andy Reist added helpers on Doyle's goal.
Pierce Charlson saw 15 shots come his way stopping all but one.
Period Two
Deivs Rolovs would take over the goal for Niagara to start the second frame. Not even two minutes into the second period
Noah Hackett would put one home to take Purple and White's first lead of the game on the power play.
Hackett's goal would come at the 1:24 mark.
Alex Murray and
Rainers Darzins picked up assists on the goal.
Just under four minutes later the Buckeyes tied the game back up at two. Rolovs would make 10 saves only allowing one sneak by.
Period Three
Sophomore
Mitchell Day would play the rest of the way for the Purple Eagles allowing one goal on seven shots.
The Purple and White would outshoot Ohio 8-5 in the third period.
Johnny Wescoe and
Luke Mylymok both had two shots on goal followed by
Ethan Lund,
Jonathan Ziskie, and
Andy Reist each having one.
Overtime
The Buckeyes would have the only two shots in overtime, with Joe Dunlap scoring his second of the game and the game-winner.
Niagara Notes
• All three Niagara goalies played at least one period. The trio would record a 0.900 save percentage.
• Six different Purple Eagles would at least record one point.
