YSU Tops Niagara in Thursday Twin Bill

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – The Purple Eagles dropped both games of its non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at Youngstown State, falling to 2-21 overall. 
 
Game 1 Recap: Niagara 1, Youngstown State 2
• The Penguins took a 1-0 lead over Niagara in the first inning, scoring via a wild pitch from Niagara starter Maddie Hickingbottom
• After setting down the Penguins in order in the second and third innings, Hickingbottom would surrender her second run of the contest, giving YSU a 2-0 lead. 
Cara Leone would relieve Hickingbottom in the fifth inning, setting Youngstown State down in order. 
• With two gone in the top of the sixth, Lindsay Mayo and Bayleigh McCullough would single to bring Samantha Hare to the plate with runners on first and second. 
• Hare would single and advance to second as the Penguins centerfielder tried throwing Mayo out at the plate, but the Purple Eagles leader in runs scored and crossed the plate safely to get Niagara on the board. 
• In its attempt to tie the game in the seventh, Niagara would get one runner on but could not bring her home to tie the contest before the final out was recorded. 
 
Niagara Notes
Hannah Mingle stole her first bag of the season.
• Hickingbottom struck out four of her 16 batters faced, moving her season total to 69. 
• Hare now has a team-high 10 RBIs on the season, reaching double-digit runs driven in for the second-straight season. 
 
Game 2 Recap: Niagara 2, Youngstown State 4
• The Purple and White jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Hare and McCullough came across to score. 
• YSU would tie the contest in the second inning on a two-run home run off Niagara starter Riley Crum
• Crum would pitch a scoreless third inning of work to keep the game tied at 2-2 before being replaced by Sage Jackson in the fourth. 
• In her first inning of work, Jackson would allow the Penguins to plate two via a two-out double. 
• Youngstown State's pitching staff would strand four Purple Eagles over the final three innings to hold on to its 4-2 win.  
 
Niagara Notes
Shayna Myshrall picked up her second double of the season. 
Kennedy Laird made her first career start behind the plate for NU.
Kaylee Haines picked up her first career base hit with a single in the second inning. 
 
Up Next
• Niagara will open the home portion of its schedule with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 15, versus Iona. The first pitch between the Gaels and Purple Eagles is set for noon.
