Errors Plague Niagara at Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, NJ –  The Purple Eagles recorded a total of 10 errors over two games as Saint Peter's swept Niagara Sunday afternoon in MAAC softball action at Jaroshack Field.
 
Game 1 Recap: Niagara 2, Saint Peter's 4
• The Peacocks opened the scoring in the third inning with a unearned run against Niagara ace Maddie Hickingbottom.
• Saint Peter's would add three more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead over the Purple and White.
• In the top of the fifth, freshman Kaylee Haines would homer to right center to get the Purple Eagles on the board and make it a three-run ball game, 4-1.
• In the top of the seventh with the score still 4-1 in favor of SPU, Niagara would get its leadoff hitter on as Sophia Marerro reached on an error and made it all the way to third
Kennedy Laird would come in to pinch run with Jaden Swiatek would ground out to the right side, allowing the second run of the game to come across to score for Niagara.
• That would be as close as NU would get as the next two batters would go down in order.
 
Niagara Notes
• The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Purple Eagles and moves their record to 6-26 on the season and 2-9 in MAAC play.
• Haines' home run in the fifth was the first of her career.
• Hickingbottom went five innings and struck out five.
 
Game 2 Recap: Niagara 3, Saint Peter's 15
• Saint Peter's scored five runs off Niagara starter Cara Leone in the second inning, taking a commanding 5-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
Riley Crum would come into the game in the third, relieving Leone in the circle.
• The Peacocks would score five runs off the Niagara senior without recording an out and Julia Thompson took over in the circle.
• The Saint Peter offense wouldn't slow down with the pitching change, scoring three more before the first out of the inning was recorded.
• The inning would finally come to a close with Saint Peter's extending its lead to 14-0.
• In the top half of the fourth, Samantha Hare would get on via a leadoff bunt and score on a Marerro double to right center.
Hannah Mingle and Kaity McInall would each drive in a run in the fifth, making it a 15-3 game in favor of the Peacocks.
• SPU would record the final out in the fifth to earn the 15-3 win over NU.
 
Niagara Notes
• Niagara drops to 6-27 overall and 2-10 in MAAC play this season.
• Marerro moved her RBI total to eight on the season with her fourth double of the year.
• McInall and Mingle now have four RBI on the season.

• Niagara returns to Monteagle Ridge for a midweek conference game against Battle of the Bridge Rival Canisius. First pitch between Niagara and Canisius is set for 3 p.m.
