Purple Eagles Drop a Pair to Iona

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Niagara saw its record move to 2-25 with a pair of losses to Iona Saturday afternoon in MAAC softball action from Monteagle Ridge.

Game 1 Recap: Niagara 2, Iona 5 (11 innings)
• After allowing a hit to the leadoff batter to start the game Maddie Hickingbottom set down 10-straight Gaels before allowing a double in the fourth. She would then bounce back and strand the runner at second to end the inning.
• After four scoreless innings the Purple Eagles pushed across two in the fifth, one via an error by the Iona leftfielder and another on a Samantha Hare single through the left side.
• The Gaels would hit a two-run homer off Hickingbottom in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
• The score would remain the same until the top of the 11th when the Gaels struck for three to take a 5-2 lead.
• In the bottom of the 11th inning, the Purple Eagles would go down 1-2-3, giving Iona the three-run win.

Niagara Notes
• Hare went 3-for-5 at the plate, including a double to extend her hit streak to five games.
• Hickingbottom struck out 12 batters, two shy of her career-high 14 she set down against Youngstown State in 2022.
• Hare's RBI in the fifth was her team leading 12th of the season.

Game 2 Recap: Niagara 0, Iona 3
• Niagara starter Cara Leone would allow five hits without surrendering a run through her first four innings of work.
• In the fifth, Leone would give up two singles to start the inning, prompting a pitching change, as Sage Jackson was called upon with no outs and two on in the inning.
• Iona would get one run off of the NU reliever who set down three-straight after walking the first batter she faced.
• The Gaels would score two runs in the sixth to earn a 3-0 win over NU.
