Purple Eagles Force Winner Take All Game Against Sacred Heart

Fairfield, CT—The Niagara hockey team extended their season on Saturday night as they defeat Sacred Heart in game two of the Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals. Niagara downed the Pioneers 4-1 on Saturday night.
Game Recap
First Period
  • The Pioneers opened the scoring at the 7:09 mark of the first period as they looked to close out the playoff round.
  • The Purple Eagles responded less than two minutes later. The duo of Jay Ahean and Ryan Cox pressured the Pioneers below their goal line and forced a turnover. Cox had the puck on his stick and found a wide open Shane Ott who was all alone in the slot. Ott made no mistake and scored his ninth goal of the season.
  • Neither team scored in the rest of the first period, Sacred Heart led 13-9 in shots after the opening 20 minutes.
  • Niagara doubled up Sacred Heart in the faceoff circle in the first period as Niagara went 10-5 in the faceoff dot.
Second Period
  • Niagara took the lead just 1:16 into the second period. Olivier Gauthier forced a turnover deep in the Sacred Heart zone and collected the puck. He took a shot from just above the goal line and banked it off the goalie for his ninth of the season.
  • The rest of the middle frame was back and forth with neither team scoring in the rest of the period.
  • Sacred Heart once again outshot the Purple Eagles 13-7 in the middle stanza.
  • Nagara won nine of 16 draws in the second period.
Third Period
  • The Purple Eagles extended their lead 5:18 into the third period. The trio of Ryan Naumovski, Brandon Stanley, and Lars Rodne combined for a goal. Rodne found Stanley in the high slot. Stanley saw Naumovski driving to the net, Stanley fired a shot-pass towards Naumovski who tipped it in for his eighth goal of the season.
  • With a two goal lead the Purple Eagles forced a lot of outside shots in the third period despite being outshot 12-8 in the third period.
  • Sacred Heart pulled its goal with just under four minutes left in the third period. The faceoff was deep in the Niagara zone. Glebs Prohorenkovs won the faceoff and Albin Nilsson found Casey Carreau was looking to breakout. Carreau fired the shot from the Purple Eagle zone and iced the game with his eighth goal of the season.
  • Niagara won 11 of 18 faceoffs in the third period.
Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles blocked 21 shots on the night which included Lucas Bahn blocked a game high five shots. Prohorenkovs and Ott both blocked three shots in the game.
  • Chad Veltri made 37 saves in the game, Veltri had made 30 or more saves in 11 games this season.
  • Ott now has points in six of the last seven games, in that stretch he has five goals and three assists.
  • The Purple Eagles went 30-19 in the faceoff circle with Jason Pineo leading the way at 12-6. Both Ryan Cox and Prohorenkovs had nine wins and were at 75% and 60% respectively.
  • Niagara killed off both Sacred Heart power plays and allowed just four shots.
  • The Purple Eagles scored four goals in a game for the 14th time this season, Niagara is 13-0-1 in games in which they score four or more.
  • Niagara led after 40 minutes for the 18th time this season, the Purple Eagles are 15-1-2 this season.
  • In their last six elimination games, the Purple Eagles are 4-2.
