Purple Eagles End Historic Season In Opening Round Of WNIT

Green Bay, Wisc.—The Niagara women's basketball team played in the WNIT for the first time in program history as they traveled to Wisconsin to face the Green Bay Phoenix. The Purple Eagles fell to the Horizon League regular season champions 84-52.
Game Recap
First Quarter
  • The Phoenix opened the game and jumped out to a 24-13 lead in the opening frame.
  • Angel Parker was responsible for the first points in Niagara postseason history as she hit a two pointer just over two minutes into the game. She led the Purple Eagles with four points in the quarter.
  • Nickelle O'Neil hit a three pointer in the quarter while Saige Glover, Ary Hicks, and Brooklyn Jones all had two points in the quarter.
  • The Purple Eagles forced four turnovers with Jade Rutledge recording a steal. Angel also registered a block in the quarter.
Second Quarter
  • Green Bay outscored Niagara 25-5 in the second quarter as they went to the locker room with a 49-18 lead.
  • Glover and Aaliyah Parker each had two points in the second quarter while Nickelle O'Neil also had a point.
  • The Purple Eagles forced another four turnovers in the second quarter and had eight through 20 minutes of play. Marlie Dickerson, Jones, and O'Neil all had a steal in the second quarter.
Third Quarter
  • The Purple Eagles hung tough in the third quarter as they scored 20 points while Green Bay scored 21.
  • Angel had a game high 13 in the quarter while Rutledge had four points, Jones had two while Glover had one point.
  • The Purple Eagles forced six turnovers in the third quarter and scored 10 points off the turnovers.
  • Niagara also had 10 points in the paint and five points on the fast break.
Fourth Quarter
  • In the fourth quarter, the two teams were even as both teams scored 14 points.
  • Aaliyah led all scorers in the frame with six points. In her final quarter of her college basketball career O'Neil had four points while fellow graduate student Maddy Yelle had two points in the quarter.
  • Niagara had four steals in the fourth with Angel having two, O'Neil one, and Aaliyah one.
Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles finish the season with a 18-13 record, it is the first winning record for Niagara since the 2004-05 season when they went 17-12 and 11-7 in conference play.
  • Niagara finished with 16 MAAC wins and earned its first second seed in the MAAC Tournament in program history and highest finish since the 1992-93 season when they won the MAAC regular season championship.
  • The Purple Eagles finished the regular season leading the nation in steals per game, turnover margin and forced turnovers per game.
  • Both Angel and Aaliyah Parker were named to the All-MAAC First Team.
  • The Purple Eagles set a new program record for steals in a season. 472 steals beats the record that was set last season of 398. Niagara also set a new record for steals in game with 15.2.
  • This season Niagara averaged 28.1 forced turnovers which breaks the program record from last season. Both seasons Niagara has led the NCAA.
  • Niagara earned a bid to a postseason tournament for the first time in program history.
