Women's Basketball Uses Season Best First Half To Fly Past Peacocks

Jersey City, N.J.—The Niagara women's basketball team opened it's second to last road trip in the Garden State as they face Saint Peter's. The Purple Eagles led for just over 37 minutes and earned a 80-51 win over the Peacocks.
Game Recap
First Quarter
  • Aaliyah Parker opening the scoring off the opening jump ball as the Purple Eagles took an early lead.
  • Niagara outscored the Peacocks 24-13 in the opening frame as Angel Parker had a game high nine points in the first on 4-6 shooting from the field.
  • Jade Rutledge, Sydney Faulcon, and Aaliyah all had four points to open the game as Niagara used a seven point run to build the 11 point lead.
  • The Purple Eagles forced 11 turnovers in the first quarter alone and turned it into 13 points. Niagara also had 14 points in the paint and got seven points from the bench.
Second Quarter
  • The Purple Eagles nearly doubled up Saint Peter's in the second quarter as they outscored the Peacocks 25-13 in the frame.
  • It was Aaliyah who led the way in the second as she had a game high seven points in the second stanza. She also pulled down four rebounds including three offensive as Niagara had 12 boards as a team.
  • Faulcon added another four points in the second quarter while Rutledge, Angel, Shelby Fiddler, and Lore Porter all had three points in the frame.
  • Niagara forced 10 Saint Peter's turnovers and used them for 15 of their 25 points. The Purple Eagles also pulled down seven offensive boards and notched 10 second chance points.
  • At the break, Niagara led 49-26 with Angel having a game high 12 points and Aaliyah with 11 points.
Third Quarter
  • Saint Peter's attempted to start it's comeback in the third quarter but the Purple Eagles still edged them 19-15 in the third.
  • The Purple Eagles forced another eight turnovers in the third and turned it into 12 points.
  • Seven different Purple Eagles had multiple points in the frame with Aaliyah and Ary Hicks having a game high four. Nickelle O'Neil had three while Angel, Maddy Yelle, Marlie Dickerson, and Saige Glover all had two points.
  • Niagara had it's biggest lead of the game in the third quarter as they led by 32 with a minute left in the frame.
Fourth Quarter
  • The offense slowed down in the fourth but the Purple Eagles still built on it's lead by two as they outscored Saint Peter's 12-10 in the final 10 minutes.
  • Of the 12 points in the fourth, Porter accounted for eight of them as she went 2-3 from the field, 2-2 from three, and 2-2 at the line. Glover had two points and Hicks had the other two points in the quarter.
  • Niagara had five steals as Rutledge accounted for three of them, she also had three blocks in the fourth.
  • All 12 points in the fourth were scored by players off the bench while the starting five combined for just 7:12 of action in the fourth.
Niagara Notes
  • Niagara scored a season high 49 points in the first half which topped their 48 points they scored against Canisius on Jan. 25.
  • Aaliyah led the team with 15 rebounds while pulling down nine rebounds, Angel was right behind her as she had 14 points.
  • Porter had a career high 13 points while shooting 4-7 from the field in just over 15 minutes.
  • Rutledge had a career high nine rebounds while also having a career high four blocks and six steals.
  • Niagara forced 36 turnovers in the win which is tied for the second most they have forced this season. They forced a season high 38 turnovers in the first game of the season series against Saint Peter's on Jan. 7.
  • The Purple Eagles tallied nine blocks which is a season high, they had five in their season opener against Loyola (MD).
  • Niagara made 30 field goals in the game which is a new season high while also taking a season high 28 three point attempts.
  • The Purple Eagles sit in third in the MAAC with a 10-3 MAAC record, they also have on game in hand over Quinnipiac who sits in second place at 11-3.
