Purple Eagles Close Out Road Trip Against Maryland

College Park, MD—The Niagara women's basketball team fell on Wednesday night as they faced the Maryland Terrapins who opened the season as the 14th team in the country and are currently receiving votes in the latest AP Poll. Niagara fell 114-44 to the Terps.

First Quarter

Maryland opened the game with a 9-0 run. Niagara scored 11 points in the opening quarter while Maryland scored 33 points to build an early lead. Alyssa Rossignol had a team high four points in the first quarter while Shelby Fiddler had three, and Ameila Strong and Ary Hicks had two points each. Niagara pulled down five boards which included three on the offensive side. Strong, Saige Glover, Hicks, Rossignol, and Marlie Dickerson each had a rebound in the first quarter.

Second Quarter

Niagara scored six points in the second quarter as Kylie Buckley and Lore Porter each had three points. Porter hit one three while Buckley had a field goal and a free throw. Niagara forced five turnovers while having three steals. Porter, Hicks, and Buckley each had a steal. Niagara pulled down five offensive rebounds along with four defensive rebounds. Strong, Glover, and Hicks all had two rebounds while Destiny Strother, Dickerson, and Lexie Roe each had a rebound.

At the half

The Purple Eagles had 14 rebounds in the first half while Rossignol led the team with four points. Strong, Glover, and Hicks all had three rebounds. Buckley, Rossignol, Hicks, and Glover all had a steal in the half.

Third Quarter

Niagara had 18 points in the third quarter with six different Purple Eagles scoring. Strong and Strother each had a team high four points while Roe and Porter each hit a three in the quarter. Fiddler and Rossignol each had two points. Niagara forced seven turnovers in the quarter with Strong, Chardonnay Hartley, Porter, and Rossignol each having a steal.

Fourth Quarter

Maryland closed out the game in the fourth quarter as Niagara had just nine points. Rossignol had a team high four points while Glover and Hicks each had two points, Dickerson also added a free throw. Niagara had 10 rebounds in the fourth quarter. Glover and Buckley each had three rebounds while Rossignol pulled down two.

Niagara Notes

·       Rossignol had a team high 10 points which set a new career high for the freshman. She also pulled down three rebounds.

·       Strong pulled down seven rebounds with six of them coming on the offensive board. Strong has had five or more rebounds in four games this season.

·       Glover had six rebounds, it was her third game this season with five or more boards.

·       Niagara had 10 steals which is tied for the second most that Maryland has given up this season.

·       The Purple Eagles took 70 shots, it is the third time this season Niagara has taken 70 or more shots.

·       Niagara drops to 0-5 against Maryland in program history.

·       Niagara has now faced three straight teams who were in the national poll for the first time in program history.

·       The Purple Eagles had a season low 18 fouls in the game.

·       Niagara has had 10 or more steals in five of seven games this season.

·       With their 16 offensive rebounds, Niagara has now pulled down 15 or more offensive rebounds in five games this season.

Niagara faces Radford for the first time in program history on Saturday with tipoff scheduled for 2 PM. Niagara will host faculty and staff appreciation day along with ugly sweater day on Saturday.
