Niagara Outscores #7 LSU In The Fourth But Falls 99-65

George Town, Cayman Islands—The Niagara women's basketball team opened the Cayman Island Classic on Friday afternoon as they faced reigning National Champion LSU who entered the game ranked seventh in the country. Despite outscoring LSU 26-18 in the fourth quarter the Purple Eagles fell 99-65.

First Quarter

The Tigers doubled up the Purple Eagles as they scored 28 points while allowing 14 points in the first quarter. Niagara forced the Tigers into six turnovers in the opening quarter while having three steals. Ary Hicks, Lore Porter, and Chardonnay Hartley all had a steal. Destiny Strother had a team high five points in the first quarter as she hit a three and a pair of free throws. Porter also hit a three in the quarter while Hartley, Hicks, and Alyssa Rossignol all had two points. Hartley had two assists in the first quarter while Saige Glover and Porter each had one. Rebounds were tied at 10 in the first while Niagara pulled down six offensive boards.

Second Quarter

Niagara was outscored 32-13 in the second quarter as LSU shot 70.6% from the field in the quarter. Niagara forced five turnovers in the quarter with three steals. Amelia Strong had two steals while Porter had the other steal. Hartley had a team high eight points in the quarter while going 6-6 at the free throw line. Strong and Lexie Roe each had two points while Rossignol had one point. Niagara was 9-10 at the free throw line in the second quarter.

At the half

Hartley had 10 points after 20 minutes while Strother had five points and Porter and Rossignol each had three points. Roe, Hicks, and Strong all had two points. Niagara forced 11 LSU turnovers in the first half while having six steals. Niagara had nine offensive rebounds in the first half while allowing LSU just four.

Third Quarter

Niagara looked to narrow the lead in the third quarter but LSU outscored the Purple Eagles 21-12 in the third quarter. Strother had a pair of threes for six points in the quarter. Hicks, Glover and Kylie Buckley all had two points. Niagara pulled down 11 rebounds which included nine on the defensive side.

Fourth Quarter

Niagara outscored the Tigers in the fourth quarter as they scored 26 points while limiting LSU to 18 points. Hartley had a quarter high eight while Porter had six points. Marlie Dickerson had three points while Strong, Glover, Rossignol, and Hicks all had two points, Roe made one free throw as well. The Purple Eagles outrebounded LSU 11-9 in the quarter as Dickerson had a team high three boards. Niagara forced seven turnovers in the fourth while having just two steals. Niagara scored eight points off turnovers while draining 14 points in the paint.

Niagara Notes

·       It was the first time that Niagara faced LSU and the first time they faced a SEC team since 1991.

·       Niagara is just the second team this season to hold LSU under 100 points in an LSU win this season.

·       Hartley had a team high 18 points, she also drew a game high nine fouls. She is averaging 14.2 points per game and has had 15 or more points in three games this season.

·       Strother had 11 points with nine coming from three pointers.

·       Niagara outrebounded the Tigers 39-38. Niagara is the first team to outrebound LSU this season while they also grabbed a season low 38.

·       The Purple Eagles forced 21 turnovers while having eight steals. The 21 turnovers is the most by LSU this season.

·       10 of 11 Purple Eagles had a points in the game with all 10 having multiple points.

·       Niagara took a season high 24 shots from three against LSU.

·       Niagara's bench outscored LSU's 19-18.
