NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY - Freshmen
Alberto Sanchez Cervera scored twice en route to a 3-2 win for Niagara (1-3) over Stonehill (0-4) on a rainy Monday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action from Niagara Field.
Game Recap
First Half
• Niagara opened the scoring in the 13th minute of play when a corner kick from
Stephen Hasse found thee head of Sanchez Cervera and then the back of the net.
• About 15-minutes later, the Purple and White would have another corner kick opportunity. This time
Nuukele Gboe sent the ball into the box where
Jayson Repine redirected toward Sanchez Cervera who again found the back of the net with his head to give NU a 2-0 lead.
• Stonehill would get one back in the 44th minute when Ekrem Hadzik sent a free kick into the bottom right corner of the net for the goal.
• Fresham goalkeeper
Jamie Barry made one save in the first half of play.
Second Half
• Niagara quickly got its lead back to two goals when
Rodrigo Almeida was fouled in the penalty area, leading to a penalty kick goal in just the 46th minute of play.
• Following the goal, Niagara would keep the pressure on, recording six shots in the half, two of which went on target.
• Barry finished the contest with two saves on 11 total shots.
Niagara Notes
• The Purple and White get their first win of 2022 and first win all-time against Stonehill.
• Sanchez Cervera is the first Purple Eagle to record a multi-goal game since Jeldrik Dallman in 2021.
• Hasse now leads the team with two assists on the season.
