Niagara and Manhattan Split Sunday Matinee

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Niagara softball team took game one, 9-1, of its MAAC softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon versus Manhattan, before falling to the Jaspers in game two, 9-5.
 
Game 1 Recap
• After Manhattan took a 1-0 via a solo home run in the top of the first, Shayna Myshrall tied the game in the home half with a solo home run of her own.
• The game would remain tied 1-1 until the bottom of the third when Myshrall doubled to left center to drive in Niagara's second run of the game.
• A passed ball and a throwing error led to four more runs in the third for NU, giving the Purple and White a 6-1 lead.
• With the bases loaded in the sixth, Maggie Kellner laced a bases clearing double that lifted Niagara to a 9-1 win over the Jaspers.
Maddie Hickingbottom got the start for Niagara, earning her third win of the season. The junior allowed two hits and one run in 5.0 innings while striking out five.
Cara Leone came pitched 1.0 inning out of the pen for NU. The transfer fanned one and stranded two runners on base.
• Four Purple Eagles picked up a pair of hits in game one, including Myshrall who had two extra base hits in the contest.
 
Game 2 Recap
• Manhattan scored five of its nine runs in the first two innings, including three in the first and two in the second.
• With the score 9-0 in the sixth, the Purple Eagles scored twice, first on a solo home run by Riley Crum and later on a double by Samantha Hare that scored Kaity McInall.
• Niagara would then strike for three in the bottom of the seveth as Hannah Mingle, Madison LaPenta and Hare scored to make it a 9-5 game.
• That is as close as NU would get as the Purple Eagles fell to Manhattan, 9-5 in game two.
• Crum lasted just 1.1 innings in game two before being relieved by Julia Thompson. Thompson tossed 2.2 innings in relief, striking out four of the 12 batters she faced.
• Leone pitched the final 3.0 innings of the contest, allowing two hits and striking out one.
• Crum went 2-for-3 at the dish and Hare went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
 
Niagara Notes
• Hickingbottom reached the 100 K mark with her first strikeout in first inning of game one becoming the first Purple Eagle to reach triple-digit strikeouts since Bertrand in 2019.
• Crum finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with a homer, an RBI and two runs scored.
• Mingle batted .500 against the Jaspers and had the first multi-hit MAAC game of her career.
Heather Haberman made two  appearances as a pinch hitter Sunday afternoon, going 1-for-2.
• Myshrall and Kellner both wen 3-for-7 Sunday and drove in a pair of runs.
• Kellner hit two doubles and now has 15 on the season.
• After hitting long balls today, Myshrall and Crum are tied for second on the team with two this season.
• Hare reached base three times and came around to score three runs. The sophomore also drove in a pair of Niagara runs on the afternoon.
• Leone pitched 4.0 innings of relief across both games, allowing three hits and one run and struck out two.
