Niagara Completes Season Sweep of Canisius

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – In the 100th installment of the Battle of the Bridge, Niagara (13-14, 10-9 MAAC) defeated Canisius (4-24, 2-17 MAAC) 82-78 Saturday evening in MAAC women's basketball action from the Gallagher Center.

Four Purple Eagles reached double-figures, led by Angel Parker's 22 points, followed by 21 from Aaliyah Parker. Ally Haar and Kyra Grimshaw added 12 points each as Niagara finished the game 29-for-77 from the field.

Game Recap
First Quarter
• Niagara and Canisius traded the lead three times through the first 4:33 of the game as it was tied 12-12 at the 5:17 mark.
• From there, Canisius would go on an 8-1 run to take a 20-13 lead over Niagara with 1:10 remaining in the first quarter.
• The Purple Eagles would close the quarter on a 6-2 run to make the score 22-19 after 10-minutes of action.
• Angel scored seven of Niagara's 19 points, followed by Haar and Aaliyah with four apiece.

Second Quarter
• Niagara would tie the game at 22 with a 3-pointer from Marianna Freeman, but Canisius would make it a 3-point game on the very next possession.
• Niagara took its first lead of the second quarter after Olivia Mason.
• The lead would change hands multiple times over the next three-plus minutes before the Golden Griffins took a four-point lead at the 5:46 mark of the quarter.
• Canisius would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the quarter, taking a 42-37 advantage into the locker rooms.

Third Quarter
• Canisius would go on a 7-2 run to start the third quarter and take a 49-39 lead as a result.
• Over the next 2:17 of game action, the Purple Eagles would score 10 unanswered to tie the game at 49-all.
• That was followed by the Golden Griffins' 9-3 run, giving Canisius a 58-52 margin with 1:59 to go in the quarter.
• The Purple and White would respond with a 7-3 spurt of its own to trim the Canisius lead to 61-59 heading into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter
• The Golden Griffins lead wouldn't last long as Angel connected on her fourth 3-pointer of the game to give NU a 62-61 advantage.
• By the 8:10 mark, the NU lead would grow to 11 points, 71-63, as Angel capped off a short 5-0 run for the Purple Eagles.
• Niagara would remain in front until the 1:13 mark when Canisius tied the game at 76.    
• The Purple and White would close the contest on a 6-2 run to seal the Battle of the Bridge sweep of Canisius.

Niagara Notes
• Niagara last swept the regular season series with Canisius in 2009-10.
• Angel finished the game with four steals and is now three away from tying the single-season steals record of 109.

• Aaliyah recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her 21 points.
• All four of Niagara's graduating class recorded a point in today's game. Haar and Grimshaw finished with 12 points, Mason added seven, and Arianna Johnson scored two.
• Grimshaw finished second on the team with seven boards, followed by Angel and Mason with five.
• Aaliyah recorded six steals as Niagara picked up 12 as a team.
• The Purple and White finished with 20-second chance points, 40 points in the paint, and 29 points off turnovers.

Up Next 
• Niagara will close out the regular season with a home game against Iona on Thursday, March 3. Tip-off between the Purple Eagles and Gaels is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Gallagher Center.
